Whatever its incarnation, be it chicken noodle or loaded potato, bisque, broth or stew, soups are quintessential winter fare.

Most restaurants have a version any time of year, and it's difficult to pick favorites among them, from a miso at our favorite Asian spot to a creamy potato at the deli close to work.

Here are five we love this time of year - or any time of year, really.

New Atlas Grill's Roasted Red Pepper Soup, $4.95

415 S. Boston Ave.

Although we're a fan of the loaded potato and Southwest chicken soups here, the roasted red pepper at Atlas is awesome - like a kickier tomato bisque that begs for a grilled cheese. Or, better still, with The Cincinnati, which is pimiento cheese on toasted wheat bread ($5.95 or with bacon, $6.95).

Sproutz's Chicken Soup, $3.25-$4.25

2602 S. Harvard Ave.

Chicken soup is good for the soul, the old saw goes. We heart this chicken soup, in particular - either with rice or their yummy house-made matzo balls.

Need to take something homemade to a sick friend? Go with the quart size ($8.50).

Full Moon Cafe's Tortilla Soup, $4.95

1525 E. 15th St.

Billed as "world famous" on their menu, the tortilla soup at Full Moon is probably one of the restaurant's most popular dishes. It was the first dish we ever tried here, and it's still our favorite - and not just because of the complimentary refill.

McGill's French Onion Soup Au Gratin, $6.99

1560 E. 21st St., 6058 S. Yale Ave. and inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa

You can't go wrong with a rich French onion soup, especially when cheese is involved. This beauty comes topped with melted cheese and fried onion strings, and the taste stands out from others like it around town.

Dalesandro's Potato Soup, $10.50

1742 S. Boston Ave.

If it's claimed to be owner Sonny Dalesandro's favorite, it has to be good. A creamy chicken broth with cubed potatoes, onion, mushrooms and Italian sausage - this is a heartily amazing dish.
