SKIATOOK - A.J. Surritte, Garrett Massey, and Jesse Haynes propelled Skiatook to a 69-62 victory over 6A No. 20 Southmoore Thursday afternoon in boys basketball action at the Skiatook Invitational Tournament.
The Bulldogs (5-3) will play Owasso at 8:30 p.m. Friday in winners bracket semifinal action.
In other boys games Thursday, 5A No. 11 Bishop Kelley rallied past Vinita 49-40, while NOAH downed Sand Springs 67-51.
The Comets (9-3) and Jaguars (14-5) will square off in the other winners bracket semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Skiatook 69, Southmoore 62: Surritte had a game high 21 points. Massey scored 19 and Haynes had a double-double, 16 points and 16 rebounds.
"We played team basketball," said Skiatook head coach Shane Branscum. "I couldn't be prouder. They are a great bunch of kids and we are working to get better."
Skiatook led wire to wire and built a 51-33 lead after three quarters. The Sabercats (4-4) scored the first six points of the final period but never closed the gap to fewer than six points.
"We have got to learn to finish," said Branscum. "The most important thing is playing good defense."
The Bulldogs showed some of that solid defense by holding Southmoore to just five first-half field goals en route to a 29-14 halftime advantage.
Kelley 49, Vinita 40: Matt Craig scored a game-high 22 points for the Comets. Brennan Adams added 11 off the bench. Garret Maxey led the Hornets (5-4) with 16 points.
Vinita scored the first six points of the game and led 15-6 after the first quarter. A 13-3 edge in rebounding helped drive that advantage.
Kelley battled back in the second period. Adams made a pair of free throws with 56 seconds left in the first half for the Comets' first lead at 20-18, the halftime margin.
"I thought Vinita came out with more energy," said Kelley head coach Danny Limes. "We responded well though in the second quarter."
Adams made the play of the game with 45 seconds remaining. He grabbed a rebound and converted a layup after a missed free throw attempt to make it 43-38.
"That was the back-breaker," said Limes. "Brennan played a great game. Vinita has a good team and they are well-coached."
Kelley then went 6-of-6 at the free-throw line in the final 26 seconds to seal the deal.
"We hit some key free throws down the stretch," said Limes. "Overall I am pleased. I think we are improving. I like the dynamics of our team. The guys get along well and that makes it fun to coach."
NOAH 67, Sand Springs 51: Michael Maras scored a game high 23 points for the Jaguars. Teammates Allonzo Trier and Laron Stokes finished with 19 and 12 points, respectively.
"Michael had good rhythm and was in a zone," said NOAH head coach Chris Wallace. "Laron is big and strong and our outside shooting didn't allow (Sand Springs) to double team him."
The Sandites (0-10) also had three players in double figures. Ashton Palmer led the way with 17 points while Josh Lattie and Kodee Carpenter scored 10 apiece.
NOAH never trailed and led 22-7 after the first quarter and 38-18 at the half. Sand Springs fought back to 52-41 at the end of the third quarter.
The Sandites got as close as 57-49 midway through the fourth quarter. Trier thwarted the surge with a couple of key buckets.
"We know it's going to get tougher each game," said Wallace. "We know Kelley will be ready to play. We have to mentally prepare, be focused, and get contributions from everyone."
Owasso 70, Collinsville 31: Led by 21 points from Jaylen Lowe, the Class 6A Rams scored an easy win over the 5A Cardinals.
Owasso held a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and then outscored Collinsville 39-10 over the next two periods.
