5-8 overall, 2-1 Southland

Catching up: ORU is oh-so-close to being 3-0 in its new league, the Southland Conference. The Golden Eagles' only loss was a 69-66 defeat Saturday at Nicholls State.

Player to watch: Senior point guard Jaci Bigham is on an assist binge. She has produced 10 or more in three consecutive games and leads the Southland Conference in assists.

Notes

Prize rookie: Freshman Taylor Cooper of Shawnee cracked the starting lineup as a freshman and continued a promising rookie season by scoring 16 points in a Southland home opener Thursday against Northwestern State.

Misti Cussen was asked what has permitted Cooper to be an immediate contributor. The coach's response?

"Like every freshman, Taylor has her freshman moments," Cussen said. "But I think her physical strength allows her to adjust to the pace and the physicality."

Playing big: Sarah Shelton, a 6-foot-3 junior transfer from SMU, has scored 50 points in three Southland Conference games.

Cussen said Shelton has a volleyball background and she "gets up so quick" with long arms.

"She would have been the player of the week in the Southland last week had we gotten that win at Nicholls State," Cussen said.

Fifteen again: Junior guard Christian Key made her second start of the season Thursday and matched a career-high with 15 points. She scored 15 in each of ORU's last two home games. Key and Cooper combined to shoot 7-of-13 against Northwestern State.
