COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Former Union quarterback and Oklahoma State graduate assistant coach Jake Spavital has been hired from West Virginia to be quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M.
Spavital will also be co-offensive coordinator alongside running backs coach Clarence McKinney. McKinney likely will handle the brunt of calling plays, as he did in the Aggies' 41-13 drubbing of Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4.
Spavital, 27, told CBSSports.com he's "excited to get to A&M and continue with the success they've had." He will be coaching Aggie quarterback Johnny Manziel, who won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman last month.
Spavital fills the vacancy left by offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who left to become head coach at his alma mater of Texas Tech a month ago.
Spavital was a graduate assistant to Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin at Houston. He also is the son of Broken Arrow head football coach Steve Spavital.
