One person was found dead inside a house that was destroyed by fire Monday evening.

Officials have not released the name or age of the person, but an EMSA spokeswoman said the victim was a male. She also a man in his 70s was treated at the scene.

When firefighters arrived in the 1600 block of West Newton Street, about two-thirds of the single-story house was engulfed in flames, a Fire Department official said. The fire was so intense that they had to fight it from the outside before knocking the flames down enough to go inside, he said.

When they entered the house, they found the person unconscious. The pulled the person outside and attempted to revive him or her, but it was too late, he said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

District Fire Chief Jeremy Moore said he wants people to remember to be careful with heaters, which are often determined to be the cause of house fires during cold spells.
