MELBOURNE, Australia -- Former University of Tulsa tennis player Arnau Brugues lost 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to Feliciano Lopez of Spain on Monday morning in the first round of the Australian Open.
Brugues, a native of Barcelona, Spain, won three matches in the qualifying draw to reach the main singles draw where he was scheduled to face Feliciano Lopez (ranked No. 42 in the world) later Monday.
Brugues, a 2009 Tulsa graduate, is the only Golden Hurricane tennis player to earn a No. 1 national singles ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. He also is the program's only four-time All-American and holds school records in career singles victories with 116 and single-season triumphs with 44 during his senior campaign.
