BARTLESVILLE — A Walmart supercenter was evacuated Monday morning in Bartlesville when a fire broke out in the meat department of the store.

Assistant Fire Chief Bill Hollander said the fire started around 8:45 a.m. in a refrigerated room housing meat.

Fire investigators were still working hours later to determine what caused the fire, which was extinguished by a combination of the in-store sprinkler system and Bartlesville firefighters.

“The fire department did an excellent job of containing the fire to this building,” Hollander said. “Let’s just say millions of dollars of merchandise was saved.”

No one was injured in the blaze and Wal-Mart employees did a good job of evacuating customers from the store, Hollander said. The store reopened Monday afternoon.

A damage estimate wasn’t immediately available.
