SALLISAW — A Vian man has been convicted of felony animal cruelty in the dragging death of a horse.
The Southwest Times Record reports that a Sequoyah County jury on Tuesday found 27-year-old Rueben Ray Houston guilty and recommended a sentence of six months in the county jail. Formal sentencing is scheduled for Thursday.
Prosecutors said Houston dragged the horse for about a half-mile behind his all-terrain vehicle until the animal fell and was unable to get up. Prosecutors said Houston then cut a neighbor's fence and dragged the horse to a tree where he left it to die.
Defense attorney Steven Ramm argued that Houston thought the horse was dead and did not intentionally injure the animal.
