Letter to the Editor: What's wrong?

What's the matter with professional sports in Tulsa? We have a grandiose arena seating 17,000 plus, a spiffy new minor league baseball field, and a world-class golf course. At the BOK Center, a so-called professional hockey team, playing in a mediocre league, has embarrassed itself for a decade. Attendance measures some 4,000 if they're lucky.

The WNBA Shock vies with the hockey team for consecutive losses. The new ONEOK Field ought to field a triple A team instead of Texas League baseball. Southern Hills hasn't had a PGA tournament since 2007 and none is in sight for the future. Even a Champions Tour event would be fun. As for the ladies, the Cedar Ridge tournament stopped in 2008.

Oklahoma City, with its NBA challenging Thunder and triple A baseball and hockey teams, has a larger population than Tulsa.

We don't expect major league teams here, but the outlook for competitive pro sports is pretty dreary.

After all, high school football only lasts from September through November.
