MELBOURNE, Australia - Former University of Tulsa tennis player Arnau Brugues lost 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to Feliciano Lopez of Spain on Monday morning in the first round of the Australian Open.
Brugues, a native of Barcelona, Spain, won three matches in the qualifying draw to reach the main singles draw where he faced Lopez (ranked No. 42 in the world) later Monday.
Brugues, a 2009 Tulsa graduate, is the only Golden Hurricane tennis player to earn a No. 1 national singles ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. He also is the program's only four-time All-American and holds school records in career singles victories with 116 and single-season triumphs with 44 during his senior campaign.
