6-10 overall, 1-2 C-USA
Catching up: On Thursday night at the Reynolds Center, the Golden Hurricane defeated UTEP 67-49 and recorded its first Conference USA victory. Tulsa's Kelsee Grovey and Taleya Mayberry combined for 38 points. On Sunday at Rice, TU was beaten 56-53. Hurricane forward Tiffani Couisnard - playing in her hometown of Houston - finished the Rice game with a career-high total of 17 rebounds.
Player to watch: Hurricane freshman Kelsee Grovey, a Tulsa World All-State selection last season at Shawnee High School, scored a season-high total of 20 points against UTEP. She was 8-of-12 on shots from the field.
Notes
TU bounces back: After losing in five of its previous seven games, the Golden Hurricane shot 51 percent from the field and withstood a second-half rally to beat UTEP. Tulsa prevailed in spite of sub-par shooting at the foul line (9-of-19) and 23 turnovers. The Hurricane entered with an average of 17.3 turnovers per game.
UTEP shot only 33 percent from the field overall and 4-of-20 from 3-point range.
Mayberry update: Against UTEP, Taleya Mayberry had a typically flashy stat line. The TU senior totaled 18 points, eight assists, seven steals and six rebounds. Among active Conference USA players, she is the career scoring leader with 1,437 points.
