Oklahoma State University-Tulsa will honor four men as 2013 Icon Award winners during a ceremony this spring.
The honorees will be presented with their Icon awards on May 20 at the A Stately Affair event at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa.
The 2013 Icons are Dr. B. Frank Shaw, Muskogee physician and past president of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association; Chris Benge, senior vice president of government affairs for the Tulsa Regional Chamber and former speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives; Sen. Jim Halligan, state senator and former president of OSU; and Thomas McKeon, president of Tulsa Community College.
Shaw, who is a primary-care physician at University Heights Medical Clinic in Muskogee, worked as an adjunct clinical faculty member for the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as serving on the OSU Center for Health Sciences Physicians Advisory Council for 20 years. He was honored as Doctor of the Year in 2007 by the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association.
Benge, an OSU-Tulsa graduate, served in the Oklahoma legislature for 12 years. In 2008 as Speaker of the House he helped broker a deal to prevent the OSU Medical Center from closing. He also worked in Mayor Dewey Bartlett's administration as director of intergovernmental and enterprise development before becoming senior vice president of governmental affairs for the Tulsa Regional Chamber in 2011.
Halligan was president of OSU for 10 years, during which the OSU-Tulsa campus opened. During his tenure $200 million was invested for facilities for the university. He was elected to the state Senate in 2008.
McKeon has worked at TCC for more than 30 years in several administration positions, including executive vice president and chief operating officer, before being named president in 2004. He introduced the Attend College Early program and the Tulsa Achieves program, which allows Tulsa County students to attend TCC tuition free if they complete a required number of volunteer service hours.
Proceeds from the black-tie event will fund scholarships for students attending OSU-Tulsa or the OSU Center for Health Sciences.
