Afghanistan: As of Friday, at least 2,043 members of the U.S. military had died as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The latest death reported by the military:

  • Army Sgt. David J. Chambers, 25, of Hampton, Va., died Wednesday in Panjwai District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered an improvised explosive device while on dismounted patrol. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, under control of the 7th Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
