Police say man was hurt trying to steal copper

PORUM - A Stigler area man who authorities believe was in the process of trying to steal copper was shocked and seriously injured early Saturday morning.

Russell Barlow, 40, was taken by a friend to the Porum Police Department, where he was then transported by helicopter to Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Muskogee County Deputy Michael Morrison said.

Morrison and investigator Bert Poole were dispatched at 7:15 a.m. after Barlow had allegedly chopped down a power pole equipped with a transformer and hurt himself in a hay field off Texanna Road west of Porum in an area known as Tater Hill.

Morrison said he was told by an electrical employee that there was probably $10 t+o $15 worth of copper on the pole.

Authorities retrieved a lighted hat, an ax, a large crescent wrench and a pipe wrench near the pole, Morrison said.

Barlow's condition was not available Saturday, and Poole said police will not decide whether to make an arrest until they have a chance to talk to him.

Records show that Barlow previously spent time in prison on a Haskell County drug charge.
