Columbine, Virginia Tech and Fort Hood: In all three cases only the bad guys were armed, and the armed guards, the police force and the MP responders were not able to get to the shootings soon enough to prevent the killings.
It comes down to the same result - the police forces cannot protect you from being killed by some nut, but you might, and I say might, be able to prevent your own murder if you are armed, too.
You have never heard of a gun shop or police department being threatened.
