Democratic elections are generally seen to be a process founded and cherished in the Western world. But unknown to many, they were championed about 1,400 years ago in the early history of Islam.

Whether it was the Prophet Muhammad's continued emphasis on seeking advice from representatives of all different groups or the election of subsequent leaders, Islam has a strong and illustrious history championing the importance of democracy and rule through the will of the people. This is a concept that, far from being foreign to Islam, was indeed championed by the Prophet Muhammad.

It is, therefore, with great pride and happiness that I watched these past peaceful presidential elections. As an American Muslim, I hope and pray that President Obama will lead our country towards a happy future full of tolerance and will keep the interest of the electorate at the forefront.
