Artful refresh: Alan Madewell-designed remodel gives midtown home sophisticated flair

Tulsa native Alan Madewell is an architect with a highly developed design sense and a keen eye. His belief that a house must look as if it belongs in its location was just what Jeff and Kathy Weaver desired when they purchased the one-story home at 2135 E. 24th St. with plans to remodel.
“We bought it in 2002 and started updating it in 2003,” said Kathy. “It was important to everyone involved that we remain as original as we could while still updating for our needs.”
Madewell’s redesign opened up the interior while adding an attractive master suite on to the back of the home as well as creating a striking outdoor living area. Every living space is as useful as it is beautiful.
Widening the archway that opens the entry to an expansive sitting room adds to its appeal. This space, which includes a fireplace and built-in bookcase, is so versatile that the Weavers are using it as a dining room. Not only does it open to the adjoining sunroom, the sitting room connects beautifully to the nook and gourmet kitchen through another archway.
The sunroom has a wall that was bumped out in the remodel, which is the perfect spot for a sofa. Madewell crafted space at the back of the room into a desk area and had the existing fireplace chimney wired for a flatscreen TV. That meant adding to the brick.
“He paid attention to every little detail such as matching the brick and dyeing the mortar to match the original so it doesn’t look brand new,” said Peter M. Walter, broker owner of Walter & Associates Inc., who represents the property. He did this with the fireplace as well as the home’s facade.
Madewell’s precision is well-known among contractors and others in the housing industry. For instance, Kathy said Madewell made sure every light was exactly positioned.
“He’s a perfectionist,” Walter added. “I consider the late ‘20s and ‘30s as the peak of quality construction, where people really cared about doing things right. He is from a different era.”
The kitchen is gorgeous with warm tones and beautiful detail. A surprising feature is a large appliance garage that is built right into the tile backsplash. Cabinetry is plentiful, including a large built-in located on a wall adjacent to the appliances.
Floor-to ceiling windows and doors open the kitchen and nearby dining area to the outdoors. Original hardwoods were refinished and hardwoods added to the newer part of the house along the back, including the new master suite. This haven is stunning with a vaulted and beamed ceiling as well as built-in entertainment center.
In addition to large windows and French doors to the patio, the new master bath has a heated floor and abundant counterspace, including a makeup vanity.
“The bathroom has lots of nice touches such as the outlets in the drawer near the vanity,” Kathy said. Marble covered cabinets for jewelry are built on top of the vanity counter, and there is a lighted niche for a small TV near the marble shower. The spacious master closet includes built-ins as well as a third level for seasonal clothes.
The two other bedrooms and a TV/playroom are at the other end of the house. Every bedroom has its own bath.
The outdoor living area is perfect for entertaining. Madewell raised the backyard about four feet, and Vivion Pools did the pool. Limestone seating borders the pool and patio. A covered outdoor area near the garage includes a fireplace and built-in grill area.
“I think Alan matched the style of the house perfectly, and the style is consistent throughout the house,” Walter said. “You can’t find this level of design, construction and quality for this price.”
The home is listed for $849,000. For more information, contact Walter at 918-743-0998.

The herringbone design in the brick walkway beautifully complements the home’s stone facade.

Although it’s currently being used as a dining area, this versatile space was created as a sitting room.

Warm tones, elegant surfaces and numerous built-ins highlight the kitchen.

Natural light and views of the outdoor areas enhance the dining area.

Lavished with marble, the master bathroom also includes a heated floor.

A covered porch is the highlight of the well-designed outdoor spaces.
