Tulsa student is a semifinalist in Intel Science Talent Search

Holland Hall senior Sarah Keglovits is a semifinalist for the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search.
Keglovits, who is also a Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge Scholar at the University of Tulsa, is one of 300 semifinalists and the only one from Oklahoma.
She was chosen for her research paper "Efficient Synthesis of Glycopeptides in Water" based on the research she conducted at TU's Chalker Research Group Lab.
Being named a semifinalist means Keglovits will receive a $1,000 award, and another $1,000 will go to Holland Hall for its science, math and engineering programs.
The 40 finalists will be announced Wednesday and will go to Washington, D.C., in March for final judging and a chance to win $100,000.
"Overall, this experience has shown me both how exciting and how stressful research science can be," she said in a news release. "I believe my research experience has left me much better prepared for college-level research than I would have been without it. This research project has also shown me that, whatever specific field I eventually decide to focus on, I will always love scientific exploration."
Last fall, Keglovits was also named a semifinalist for the 2012 Siemens Competition, again the only student from Oklahoma, and was highlighted in an October issue of USA Today.
Paige Arnold, a Holland Hall faculty member, said Keglovits' research is significant and important.
"In archaic terms, it is the same as farmers and construction workers now having their own welding equipment to fix their equipment themselves and much more quickly," Arnold said. "So synthesizing in water, biochemists can now use this method in order to expedite their own work."
