Letter to the Editor: Finding commonality

Bill Johnson's Jan. 17 letter, "Difference of Opinion," should have been called "Labeling 101." His depiction of differences between Democrats and Republicans was shallow, and reminded me of the glut of political pundits on the airwaves who fail to see the complexity of issues this nation addresses daily.

It is akin to how racism places individuals into groups and ascribes them certain, usually negative traits, and says all black people are ... all Hispanics are ... all Democrats are...

As a solution-focused therapist, I know that progress happens when looking for what works and finding commonality. This type of labeling does nothing to move the discourse in this nation toward solutions and only encourages a climate of fear and distrust.
