James (Smokey) Augustus Tipton was born on April 5, 1933, in Wewoka, OK and departed this life on January 19, 2013. Smokey loved life, his family and friends. He played football at OSU until a knee injury cut short that dream. He went on to graduate from East Central University in Ada and proudly served his country as a paratrooper stationed in Germany. He retired from his job as a Chemist with the City of Tulsa and taught for a few years at Tulsa Public Schools. Smokey married Judy Thoma on November 19, 2002 and they made their home in Tulsa where both were members of St. Matthews United Methodist Church. Smokey loved to dance and you could find him sharing that passion along with his infectious smile every chance he got. Smokey was an early member of the Tulsa Rod and Gun Club and was an award- winning skeet shooter. He loved to hunt deer and duck with his sons. Smokey was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Vernon Tipton and Gladys Faye (Davenport) Tipton; brother, Leon Tipton; sisters, Joan Butler and Darlene Summers. He is survived by his wife, Judy Ann Tipton of the home in Tulsa; sons, Dr. Brent Tipton and wife Sherry of Edmond, OK, Dr. Brian Tipton of Broken Arrow, OK; and Chris Tipton of Bentonville, AR; step-daughter, Jaime Alderman and husband Rob, stepson Erick Davis and wife Lacy, all of Glenpool, OK; grandchildren, John Tipton, Michael Tipton, Max Tipton, Hunter Alderman, Cole Davis, Cody Davis, Nikkolas Duniphin and Jade Duniphin; as well as a host of extended family and friends. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Smokey’s life will be 6-8 pm, Friday, at their home. The Memorial Service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013, at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 12424 E 31st Street, Tulsa, OK.
