OKMULGEE — A 10-year-old girl sustained extensive injuries Tuesday after being bitten by a wolf-dog mix while checking her mailbox after coming home from school.

Okmulgee County sheriff’s deputies responded to the 14000 block of Monroe Road near Okmulgee around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday and identified the canine and its owner who had already restrained the dog, the report said.

The girl went by ambulance to Okmulgee Memorial Hospital and then was transferred to a Tulsa hospital by helicopter.

Undersheriff Fred McGuire said the girl was bitten on her head and upper body. There was no word on her condition, he said Thursday morning.

The dog is being quarantined with a licensed veterinarian and being tested for rabies.

McGuire said they do not anticipate filing charges against the owner of the dog.
