5 to Find: Pies worth ditching your diet

Just in case it escaped your attention, Wednesday was National Pie Day, a worthy national celebration if ever there was one.

We took on the task of finding five pies in the Tulsa area that tickled our fancy — and in the process came across a story or two. One story was wrapped around the limoncello-pecan pie at Boston Deli.

Jim Hammett, son of LaNelle Hammett Yates, who founded the famous Hammett House restaurant in Claremore in 1969, worked for a time at Boston Deli a couple of years before both he and his mother died in 2009.

“Jim’s mother did a lemon-pecan pie that I loved, and I was always trying to get the recipe,” said Boston Deli owner Ken Schafer. “She called a couple of months before she passed away and said she wanted to give me the recipe for that pie. I couldn’t get to a pencil fast enough.”

Following are five pies that caught our eye.

1. Limoncello-pecan ($4 a slice), Boston Deli, 6131 E. 61st St.: It has been altered a bit from the original Hammett House recipe, with a touch of limoncello liqueur and lemon rind added to fresh lemon juice. “It gets a little warmness from the alcohol, but you don’t need an ID to eat it,” Schafer said.

2. Guilt pie ($5), Antoinette Baking Co., 3305 S. Peoria Ave.: It starts with ganache (semisweet chocolate blended with cream) and chocolate wafer cookies that are topped with crushed caramel potato chips, a layer of caramel creme and whipped cream, all garnished with caramel-dipped potato chips. No guilt here. Antoinette stages special pie nights 7-10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

3. Chocolate meringue ($3.99), Shiloh’s, 2604 N. Aspen Ave., Broken Arrow: When nothing but a monster meringue will do, the chocolate meringue at Shiloh’s is a towering beauty.

4. Coconut cream ($6), Michael V’s, 8222 E. 103rd St.: A pound of coconut goes into every pie, not counting the topping of toasted shaved coconut, along with fresh cream, butter, milk and eggs. Savor every bite and don’t even think about counting calories.

5. Egg custard ($2.99), Sweetie Pie Bakery & Deli, 121 E. Second St., Sand Springs: Talk about comfort food. What’s more comforting than a good book, a classic movie, a cup of coffee and a piece of velvety egg custard pie?
