Letter to the Editor: Tired of right wing

I am writing in response to the Jan. 12 letter, "Truly defenseless." I am tired of the right wing comparing the slaughter of our children and other innocents by guns - due to the lax gun control in our violent society - to the exercise of a woman's legal right to choose. Unless the right-wing fringe manages to pass a "personhood bill" and overturn Roe v. Wade, (very highly unlikely) this is not a valid argument. It is a feeble attempt to allow them to hide from their legal obligation to be responsible with their guns. If the president keeps his promise, and I hope he does, they will have to give up their semi-automatic mass-killing weapons.

Women have a legal right to choose. Wacko gun owners do not have a legal right to intimidate the rest of us with their "anti-government" rhetoric and give us reasons for maintaining their arsenals. Not until assault weapons are banned, and every gun owner is required to have a background check and be registered, and possibly insured - as are all car owners - will our citizenry, including innocent 6-year-olds, feel safe in their everyday environments (schools, malls, movie theaters, etc.).
