The Sapulpa girls basketball team had lost four of its last five games, but all were competitive against quality opponents.

Head coach Darlean Calip thought the Chieftains were on the verge of becoming a good team themselves.

The Chieftains may have arrived with Thursday's 61-49 stampeding of No. 5 Booker T. Washington in a first-round game of the Jenks/Union Invitational at the UMAC.

Senior guard April Glisson scored 15 points as the No. 16 Chieftains (7-8) led almost from the start to finish in breaking an 11-game winning streak by the Hornets (12-2).

"There is so much parity in our (Frontier Conference) and all of Class 6A," Calip said. "Hopefully this will give our kids the confidence to start playing like the team we think they are capable of being."

Brice Calip, the coach's freshman daughter, scored 14 points and Rachel Dobrinski added 11 for the Chieftains, who advanced to play Union at 7 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The Redskins downed NOAH 61-44 behind I'mani Davis' 24 points.

MaKenzie Ellis and Kaylan Mayberry scored 12 and 10 to pace the Hornets, who play NOAH at 4 p.m.

Port City Classic: Cascia Hall's girls threw a defensive net over hot-shooting Victory Christian in the second half and rolled to a 52-40 first-round win.

Victory's LaRanda Thomas hit her first three 3-point attempts and scored most of her 20 points in the first half, but Cascia's Sarah Stagg gave her little room to operate over the final 16 minutes. The Commandos pushed out defensively all over the floor and changed the game.

"I went into the game knowing my assignment. I told myself I wasn't gonna take my eyes off that 'No. 3' on (Thomas') jersey," Stagg said.

Liesl Spoerl had 19 points and 10 rebounds as the 4A No. 6 Commandos (14-3) advanced to play 6A No. 2 Bixby in Friday's 4 p.m. semifinal. The Spartans (11-3) downed Skiatook behind senior guard Christina Devers, who returned to score 25 points with her left hand in a brace after missing Tuesday's game at Jenks with a broken left thumb.

Bartlesville (12-0) powered past Claremore 57-41 as Hailey Tucker scored 16 points. The Bruins advanced to the 7 p.m. semifinal against 3A No. 5 Verdigris or Catoosa.

Kiefer Invitational: It's nice having 6-foot-4 Hannah Robinson to patrol the middle, but 3A No. 17 Kellyville isn't a one-person team.

The Ponies (12-3) had three players in double figures in a 56-47 first-round win over Depew (9-7). Taylor Todd scored 16 points and Keana Upshaw added 14 to go with 11 from Robinson, who leads the Tulsa area with 5.5 blocked shots per game.

"We have guards who can shoot the ball when teams try to double on the inside," Kellyville coach Jim Upshaw said.

Kellyville used a 14-2 run to break open the game and led by as many as 16 points in the second half. The Ponies have won eight straight.
