CATOOSA - A slow start had Bartlesville girls basketball coach Terry Rogers frustrated and concerned, but Bartlesville still was able to come away with its perfect record intact.
The Class 6A No. 3 Bruins caught up and then held on for a 42-35 victory over 3A No. 5 Verdigris in one of four semifinal games at the Port City Classic on Friday night.
Bartlesville (13-0) got behind 10-2 early on, trailed 12-6 after the first quarter and trailed 16-14 at halftime. But the Bruins finally started scoring with 18 third-quarter points.
"They (Verdigris) are so well-coached and they play so hard," said Rogers. "So it was just one of those games where every time you play them, nobody is going to beat them bad."
Unfortunately for the Bruins, Verdigris wouldn't go away. With less than two minutes remaining, Bartlesville led only 37-35.
But the Bruins made enough plays in the last two minutes to hold on and defeat upset-minded Verdigris.
"We got down early, but we came out in the second half and started knocking down some shots," said Rogers.
Paige Wilson scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter, to help secure the tenuous lead. Teammate Hailey Tucker added 12 points for the Bruins.
"We just need to be a little better and a little bit more disciplined on the offensive end," Rogers said.
Verdigris (16-3) was led by Bailey O'Dell and Caitlyn Hanslovan, who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Bixby 53, Cascia Hall 45 (girls): Class 6A No. 2 Bixby was led by the spectacular play of Christina Devers, who excelled on defense and scored 27 points. The Spartans held a steady single-digit lead for most of the game, as Class 4A No. 6 Cascia Hall could get no closer than within five points in the second half.
Liesl Spoerl led all scorers for Cascia Hall with 30 points.
Memorial 69, Victory Christian 54 (boys): Class 5A No. 2 Memorial got out to a 21-3 lead and never looked back as the Chargers defeated 3A No. 5 Verdigris.
Devin Perez led the early onslaught for Memorial with three 3-pointers and 13 points in the first period. Perez finished with a game-high 15 points, while teammate Quan Deane added 12 points.
After getting behind early, Verdigris stayed in the game, but could never close the lead to double digits. Cade Upshaw and Blake Battenfield led Verdigris with 14 points apiece.
Owasso 67, Victory Christian 48 (boys): Jaylen Lowe scored 13 first-quarter points to lead 6A No. 6 Owasso past 4A No. 3 Victory Christian. Lowe finished with 23 points, while teammate Shake Milton led all scorers with 24 points.
The Rams led 22-9 after the first quarter and were never seriously threatened.
