Authorities are investigating the discovery of human remains near the Arkansas River west of downtown Tulsa.

Hikers walking along the 4900 block of West 12th Street discovered bones about 1 p.m. Sunday near the river, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office said.

A preliminary investigation determined the bones were human remains.

A skull was found with a hole in it, authorities said.

The Medical Examiner's Office will determine how old the remains are and the nature of the hole in the skull, officials said.
