Christina Devers, Bixby: The senior guard had 23 points, seven rebounds and seven steals as the 6A No. 2 Spartans gave Bartlesville its first loss, 46-43, in the Port City Classic final. With a brace on her broken left hand, Devers totaled 75 points in three games and was named tournament MVP.
Teams to watch
Muskogee (14-2): The Roughers jumped three spots in the rankings to No. 3 after winning the John Nobles Classic in Moore. Kelsey McClure scored 25 points in a 65-62 win over 6A No. 4 Southmoore in the final and was tournament MVP. Alexus Wilson scored 22 points and joined McClure on the all-tourney team. The Roughers have won nine in a row.
Ripley (20-1): Believe it or not, the 2A No. 4 Warriors have won 14 in a row. Jaclyn McKnight scored 18 points as Ripley rallied to beat 3A No. 17 Kellyville 46-42 in overtime of the Dave Calvert final at Kiefer. The Warriors reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
Games to watch
Bartlesville (13-1) at East Central (12-6), Tuesday: Both teams try to rebound from narrow losses. The Bruins fell to Bixby in the Port City final and the 5A No. 2 Cards lost to Jenks and Sapulpa in the final rounds of the Jenks/Union Invitational. The pick: East Central 51-50
Union (9-8) at Jenks (10-6), Tuesday: The 6A No. 18 Redskins nipped Jenks in Saturday's tournament final and return to the scene, hoping to beat the No. 13 Trojans for the third time in 2012-13. The pick: Jenks 62-61.
Holland Hall (15-5) at Cascia Hall (14-5), Tuesday: The Dutch have won nine of their last 10 since falling to the 4A No. 6 Commandos last month. Cascia Hall hopes for the return of point guard Reagan Derr, who sprained her ankle in the Port City Classic. The pick: Cascia Hall 60-58.
Ask the writer
Must an athlete be nominated by his or her coach to be named player of the week or included in the Hot List?
Not necessarily, but it never hurts. While it is the final responsibility of the Tulsa World staff to make those selections, deserving performances may go unreported or be overlooked. Reader input is welcome, but it stands to reason that coaches' recommendations would carry the greatest weight.
