Slow start sinks Tulsa women against UTEP

UTEP used a strong second half performance to break open a close game and defeat the University of Tulsa 50-35 in women's college basketball on Thursday night in El Paso, Texas.
Both teams struggled the first half, which ended with the Miners holding a 17-16 lead. TU made just 5-of-37 shots, while UTEP hit on just seven of its 32 attempts.
UTEP (17-2, 5-1 in Conference USA) turned things around in the second half, however, as it made nearly 52 percent of its shots and outscored TU in the paint 24-12.
Senior Taleya Mayberry was the leading scorer for the Golden Hurricane (7-13, 2-5) with 13 points. Freshman Kelsee Grovey and junior Loren McDaniel each pulled down nine rebounds.
Tulsa started strong in the second half with a 6-0 run to take a 22-17 advantage with 17:27 remaining. However, the Miners countered with an 18-2 run spanning 7:30 to take a lead they would never relinquish.
