Tulsa-area schools win OSSAA Academic Bowl state championships

EL RENO - Four high school teams from the Tulsa area won state championships Saturday in the OSSAA Academic Bowl at Redlands Community College.
Traditional powers Booker T. Washington and Claremore continued long championship runs, while Cascia Hall claimed its second title and Chelsea won its first.
Booker T. Washington won its third consecutive championship, claiming the Class 6A crown over Norman. In Class 5A, Claremore won its third championship in four years, defeating Edison in the finals.
Booker T. Washington claimed the title by winning three consecutive matches after a third-round loss to Norman. After the loss, the Hornets defeated Edmond Memorial to advance to the championship round and then beat Norman twice to win the title in the double-elimination tournament.
The Academic Bowl included schools from throughout the state. The teams - eight in each class - qualified for state in previous tournaments. Matches feature 40 questions in which players on the four-member teams can signal to answer with a hand-held buzzer. An additional 20 questions are part of "lightning rounds," when players on a team are allowed to confer before answering.
Booker T. Washington won its sixth state title in eight years and 16th crown since 1990. The team included captain Jack Schaefer, Mohamed Aly, Valerio Cousa, Aaron Hockett, Noelle Janak, Patrick Madaj, Arel Rende, Jack Sartin, Stephen Slater, Dana Sous and Connor Swan. The coaches are Diana McGinnis and Jayme Howland.
In Class 5A, Claremore swept all four of its matches to win its seventh academic state championship in 13 years. The Zebras beat Shawnee, Edmond Deer Creek and Edison twice to win the title. Claremore has been state champion or runner-up in each of the last eight years. Claremore's team included captain Ryan Lane, Kyle Brown, Jeremiah Hurd, Felicity Owens, Jared Strain, Stephen Trahan and Bailey Wilton. The team is coached by Kay Strain and Lacey Coltrane.
In Class 4A, Cascia Hall swept four straight games to claim its second championship in three years. Cascia Hall beat Jones, Oologah and Byng before defeating Stigler in the finals. Cascia Hall's team includes captain Crystal Nguyen, Zane Dennis, Kelsey Luks, Damon Meadows, Tara Grigson and Jessica Shenoi. The team is coached by Saundra Cook and Pam Benne.
In Class 3A, Chelsea swept all four of its matches to give the Rogers County school the title. Chelsea beat Tushka, Caney Valley and runner-up Warner twice. Chelsea's team includes captain Sam McKay, Ashley Daniel, Logan Draeger, Nate Frailey, Dustin Ponder, Tyler Provence and Sam Ross. The team is coached by Debbie Hoskins.
In Class 2A, Drummond continued one of the most impressive win streaks in OSSAA history. The school, located 15 miles southwest of Enid, won its 16th consecutive academic team state championship.
