My heartfelt gratitude goes to President Obama for his reference to Stonewall in his inaugural address. Stonewall has become a monumental milestone in my life.
The courageous action on the part of the Stonewall bar patrons on June 28, 1969, opened the door for me to live as the gay man I was born to be. To know that I was not alone in my struggle with fear and repression, as a marginalized citizen, was reassuring.
By relieving me of that burden, I was able to focus on the other important issues of daily life. Their action gave me the courage to come out to my family and friends as a gay man. I was rewarded with their love and support and a committed loving relationship with my partner until his death.
Thank you, President Obama, for your support of the LGBT community.
