Note to Adrian Peterson: One of your devoted fans missed you Wednesday during National Signing Day festivities at Bishop Kelley High School.
Granted, Peterson probably did not know Darienne Chapman was one of six Comet players to sign with a Division I college and a seventh with a D-III school. Had he been there, Peterson likely would have been impressed with the multiple-time state champions.
"This is a once-in-a-career event," said Kelley soccer coach Troy Tokarchik of the multiple D-1 signings. "I've had some great seniors on teams. This is by far the best. Nine of the seniors on the team have played from the start (as freshmen). It is a pretty fantastic group."
Arkansas signee Claire Kelley was the most decorated Comet at the table. She was the Gatorade Player of the Year in volleyball, but picked soccer for college.
Chapman offered the event's most dramatic pause. The University of Tulsa signee spoke of who she wanted to thank, then said, "There is one more person who is not here because he is famous," Chapman said of the ex-Sooner and current Minnesota Vikings running back. "Obviously, he's not here today, but he is my hero and a hard worker."
The crowd erupted with laughter and applause.
Others to sign were Kaela Little (Notre Dame), Kristie Wilburn (Oral Roberts), Katie Sprouse (Clemson), Bailey Hadcock (Michigan), Erin McIntosh (Wisconsin-Whitewater).
