CLAREMORE - There were going to be no surprises in the Class 5A dual state title match on Saturday night.

Collinsville coach Weston Harding made sure his team did not overlook anyone.

The end result was a third consecutive dual state championship for the Cardinals, topping Lawton MacArthur 31-24.

"They (Lawton Mac) came to wrestle," said Harding. "I coach with their coaches in the summer and they are some of the best in the state."

As if Collinsville needed any extra motivation, Lawton Mac might have subconsciously given them a gift.

"A couple of weeks ago, there was an article in the paper about how Lawton Mac wanted Collinsville so I printed out about 100 of those and posted them all over our wrestling room," said Harding, whose club beat Lawton Mac 52-17 in last year's final.

The quote from MacArthur head coach Ellis Holt was obviously not a shot at the defending state champs but it read, "This bunch is prepared for any challenge but they want Collinsville, which is arguably the best team in the state regardless of class."

Collinsville trailed 18-16 with five matches remaining but the Collinsville crowd's noise level anticipated what was coming when Christian Moody stepped on the mat.

"I just knew I had to go in and get the job done," said Moody, who pinned his opponent with 14 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Not to be out done by his practice partner, Davion Jeffries recorded a first-round pin as well to up Collinsville's lead to 28-18, and set the stage for the title clincher.

Jacob Findley made the Cardinal fans sweat but performed when it mattered, getting a takedown in overtime for a 3-1 victory.

"Our practices definitely prepare us for this type of competition," said Collinsville senior Dylan Helm.
