Letter to the Editor: A parallel

Looking at the rapid transformation of the Republican Party in the years since President Obama first took office, I can't help draw a parallel to what happened with Ross Perot's nascent Reform Party. What started as a viable centrist third party in 1995, by 2000 had become the target of a hostile takeover by Pat Buchanan, who shared little in common with the party, keeping only the name due to its brand equity.

Since 2008, we have seen the Republican Party, once the stalwart of small government, individual liberties and defending the Constitution, transformed into a party most readily identified by its hostility toward women and minorities, wasting egregious amounts of money to fight a losing battle to deny equality to same-sex couples, and pursuing an agenda to codify Christian doctrine into our legal and educational systems.

If the Republican Party's members don't quickly realize that the path they are on does not align with the majority of Americans, or with the traditional American values they once stood for, they are destined to become as relevant as the Reform Party is now.
