Letter to the Editor: Paranoids and guns

Let's see here: If unsafe highway conditions begin taking lives, we impose a speed limit to try and stop the carnage. If our old paints contain lead, we tear down the walls in our schools and even our houses. If babies are strangling in the bars of their cribs, we order manufacturing changes in cribs - and all properly so.
But if we even mention an effort to try and slow the alarming growth of gun-related carnage in this country, the whole damned place goes ballistic from an overwhelming panic that government boots will be flying in on black helicopters to try and confiscate every gun in the place. This, with the majority of Americans repeatedly insisting that "regulation" does not have to mean "control."
This whole thing suggests a severe paranoid hysteria, a mind-altering condition that could, ya know, could cause an afflicted person to snap and kill everyone around him. Therefore, I suggest that every National Rifle Association member be tested for mental stability before being cleared to buy any more guns.
Yes, Wayne LaPierre, we know: You have every constitutional right to be totally paranoid and delusional if you want to. But a paranoid with a gun? That's a different matter - as you yourself have said. Remember?
