Everywhere you turn these days, someone is talking about school shootings and gun control. The murderers who commit such crimes are people who are calling violent attention to their perception that they are failing in some important area of life.

They are hurting and angry, and when others are indifferent to their pain, they want to show as many of us as possible how it feels.

The answer, of course, is a kinder, gentler society. Sadly, an effort to create a kinder, gentler society has even less appeal than gun control in today's social, political and economic climate.

So when you bundle up your little ones to send them off to school, be sure you hug them and tell them you love them. You may not have another chance.
