Letter to the Editor: Morality the answer

In the letter, "Aussies had enough" (Jan. 16), the writer states that there has been a decrease in crime since the government bought back their guns. I don't know where the writer got that information, but I have read numerous articles stating just the opposite.

I just finished watching a video on YouTube interviewing several Aussies, and they all said there had been an increase in crime. Their statistics stated are:

  • 69 percent increase in armed robberies;

  • 28 percent increase in assaults with guns;

  • 19 percent increase in gun murders; and

  • 21 percent increase in home invasions.

Is anyone naive enough to believe that criminals will not continue to have guns? If mentally disturbed people want a gun, they can get one on the black market or have a friend who can pass the background check get one for them.

People living with a mentally disturbed person ought to be smart enough to get rid of their guns. Disarming private citizens is not the answer.

The only answer is to improve morality - and how do you legislate that?
