In response to Nancy Austere ("Ironic," Feb. 12): It isn't because we love dogs and cats more than any other states that we rate among the top for the amount of pets in our homes.
Actually it is a total embarrassment. Since we are the No. 2 puppy mill capital of the world, with no spay/neuter laws like some other states, and we also abandon thousands of animals to the streets to die of starvation every year, (shame on us), the good Samaritans do not feel like they have any other choice than taking into their homes tons of unwanted dogs and cats.
It isn't a choice; it is a must for many and it needs to change.
