18-6 overall, 8-4 Big 12

Catching up: The Sooners won't be happy with a split this week, even after winning Bedlam last Sunday afternoon. OU ran away with that one 80-61 thanks to a second-half shooting barrage. That set up Thursday night's battle for second place with Iowa State at the Lloyd Noble Center. This time, shooting let down the Sooners. They went nearly 4 1/2 minutes between field goals in the final five minutes, and it cost them a 72-68 loss.

Player to watch: Center Nicole Griffin. She made a big difference in OU's win over Oklahoma State with a career-high 21 points. That made her the Big 12 Conference Co-Player of the Week, with averages of 17 points and five rebounds. She didn't make quite as big a dent Thursday but scored 14 against Anna Prins, ISU's 6-7 post.

Notes

Updating the race: Baylor is in control at the top of the Big 12 with a 12-0 record.

OU is now 8-4 in the league and tied for third with Texas Tech. The Cyclones improved to 9-4 and took possession of the tiebreaker with the Sooners should it come down to that. (Iowa State defeated OU 82-61 on Jan. 15.)

The Sooners knocked off Texas Tech on Jan. 12 but still have to play in Lubbock on March 4.

Quick studies: OU put five players on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team this week, one of only two programs to have at least that many (West Virginia had six). First team members maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

Sooners guard Whitney Hand has a 4.0 GPA. The human relations major is also a two-time academic all-district honoree.

Teammates to make the academic first team were Joanna McFarland (biochemistry), Sharane Campbell (zoology), Griffin (multidisciplinary studies) and Jasmine Hartman (human relations).
