The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the alleged shooting of a pit bull after a teenager posted a photo of the dead animal on the Internet.
Authorities were contacted early Saturday by concerned Facebook users who became upset after viewing a photo of a dead pit bull posted by an 18-year-old Cherokee County resident, Undersheriff Jason Chennault said in a news release.
“We have received numerous calls about the incident from not only concerned people in Cherokee County and the state of Oklahoma but all across the United States and several foreign countries," Chennault said.
The teen in question is believed to have uploaded the photo onto his Facebook page after allegedly shooting the dog with a bow and arrow, Chennault said. The photo has since been removed.
An additional Facebook page was created where users have “threatened to do bodily harm to (the teen) and his family,” authorities said.
“The concerns over the fatal shooting of the animal are understood, but please refrain from making any threats against (the teen) the (his) family,” said Chennault, who said the threats will be investigated.
Authorities made contact with the teen's family in an attempt to interview him about the incident. The findings of the investigation will be turned over the Cherokee County District Attorney's office.
