The best one-word description for what transpired in the most recent Oral Roberts women's basketball game: Wow.

ORU served notice that it wants to be a player in the Southland Conference championship race, hammering Sam Houston State 90-50 in a Thursday game at the Mabee Center.

Sam Houston State came to the Mabee Center alone at the top of the Southland standings. In the aftermath, Sam Houston State shares first place with Lamar, whom ORU beat 77-48 at the Mabee Center on Jan. 24.

ORU is one-half game out of first place and will play a Saturday home game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Southland's last-place team.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 3-20 overall and 2-10 in league play, but the Islanders are all of a sudden among the conference's hottest teams. They are riding a two-game winning streak and the "victims" were defending Southland Tournament champion McNeese State and reigning Southland regular season champ Central Arkansas.

ORU rode Christian Key's 21-point performance to beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 58-41 in a Jan. 17 road game. The Golden Eagles trailed by a point at halftime.
