JENKS - It may have been a new location for the Class 5A state swimming championships, but the results were the same as Bixby and Fort Gibson repeated as the boys and girls state champions, respectively, on Saturday at the Jenks Trojan Aquatic Center.
Bixby won its third crown in the last five years by outlasting Harrah and Altus in an evening-long slugfest where the final four places hadn't been decided until the final race.
With a win in the last event, the 400 freestyle relay, Bixby finished with 275 points while Altus came in second in the relay and in the meet with 256 overall points.
Bixby sophomore Ben Deibert anchored the 400 relay team, finished third in the 50 freestyle, and won an individual first by winning the 100 freestyle to help push the Spartans to the crown.
"I won the preliminaries by .02 so I knew what I had to do in the finals," Deibert said of his 100 freestyle win. "When I hit that third turn, I still had a lot of breath."
Spartan head coach Monika Meadows praised Deibert and her swimmers for approaching the meet with selfless aspirations.
"We made a change in the 400 relay right before it started," Meadows said. "Bryan Lee was supposed to be the anchor but he came to me and said he just didn't have it in him. He went third and Ben became the anchor. Our kids showed a lot of character. They knew a title was more important than an individual win."
On the girls side, Fort Gibson logged 299 points to hold off Stillwater (260) and Bixby (237) to earn its third consecutive state championship.
"I'm proud that we're not only three-time state champion in swimming, but that our girls are also three-time state academic champions," Fort Gibson head coach Connie Dean beamed. "Someone asked me if we were building a dynasty at Fort Gibson. I don't worry about that. I just want to make sure that we keep the ball rolling."
Among the highlights of the championship day for Fort Gibson was besting its own state title in the 200 freestyle. The 2010 team held the mark at 1:47.81 and their 2013 counterparts came in at 1:46.34.
"I didn't hear we had broken the record until we were already out of the pool," said senior Hannah Cantrell, who anchored the team. "I can't even explain the feeling right now of holding that record and being a three-time champion. It just feels amazing."
