Letter to the Editor: Not their job

The president, politicians, celebrities and the wealthy can afford well-trained, armed protection; why not our children? The idea of arming teachers and school administrators is not reasonable. Their job is to teach.
I must come down on the side of trained police officers in our schools. Their job has trained them to engage an armed intruder and protect the innocent even at the risk of their life.
Not everyone has the mindset to take a life, even under the most severe circumstance. To carry a firearm one must have the mindset to use it to take a life; otherwise you are just carrying it for ballast.
People who want to get a carry license must have the mindset to use the weapon, or they should not possess it.
Although I am sure some teachers are of a mindset and ability to use a weapon to protect the children in their care, many more are not.
This is not what they are trained to do. Their job is to teach and they did not seek, nor covet, this added responsibility.
