First District Rep. Jim Bridenstine says the country is headed for an "absolute disaster" unless President Barack Obama takes tax increases out of the negotiations to avoid automatic spending cuts.

"It's tragic," he said in an interview Monday. "Absolutely tragic.

"Unless the president is willing to tax increases off the table, sequester is going to happen."

Under sequestration, $85 billion in reductions to discretionary spending will go into effect March 1. Half the reductions will be to defense spending and half to all other spending.

While calling sequestration a disaster, Bridenstine said he hopes House Speaker John Boehner will hold firm and not allow a vote on any solution that includes tax increases.

"The president has shown he is unable to control spending in any way," Bridenstine said.

Bridenstine speaks at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Baily Ranch Clubhouse and at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bixby Public Library.
