Dear Action Line: I own an older car for which parts are becoming hard to find. I'm not quite ready for do-it-yourself transmission work but would like to find a source for parts that are easier to install and available online. Got any suggestions? - D.M., Tulsa
Buy a new car. Actually, more consumers are buying auto parts online, now than ever, and experts at AutoPartsWarehouse ( tulsaworld.com/AutoPartsWarehouse) recommend the best online parts to buy and cites the most popular items sold on its website. Some parts are easy to install but hard to find at auto parts stores, making them good to buy online. Buying them online also helps consumers save time and money.
Mirrors: Side mirrors are often damaged in minor collisions with objects or other vehicles, yet they're usually easy to repair, making them excellent candidates for online purchasing. There is a huge selection, including quality aftermarket and original equipment equivalent (what the dealer would sell), available online. Mirrors that enhance your car's looks or improve its driving performance and safety, such as turn signal modules or towing mirrors, are also easy to get online and at a significant discount over dealer prices.
Lights: Also easily damaged and easy to install, lights are another good online purchase, with a wide selection of make-and-model-specific replacement taillights, fog lights, corner lights, turn-signal lights and backup lights to keep you driving safely (and legally). For burned-out bulbs, expedited shipping can ensure you receive the components you need quickly and conveniently, so you can get your lights working properly again.
Cabin filters: Most manufacturers recommend replacing your car's cabin filter(s) every 50,000 miles to keep pollen, dust and allergens out of your heating and air conditioning systems. Installation is easy, making cabin filters another great online purchase choice. The huge, online selection leaves no trouble finding the right filter for your vehicle.
Oxygen sensor: A new oxygen sensor can improve the performance of your car by ensuring the most efficient mixture of air and fuel and improving MPG. A persistent "check engine" light can often be solved with a new oxygen sensor. Oxygen sensors are small and expensive, making them the perfect online item for significant savings. Installation takes only 30 minutes, but is best handled by a professional mechanic or by the more sophisticated DIYer. Instructions on how to replace this part are available online.
Floor mats & liners: These are an excellent online purchase choice. They are not emergency items. There is an almost limitless range of choices in different colors and materials, even personally customized mats, easily available online. It would be hard to replicate the range of choices and comprehensive ability to comparison price shop at your local auto parts store.
