Letter to the Editor: Look it up

In response to Herb Childs' letter ("Paranoids and guns," Feb. 12): Most dictionaries do, indeed, define regulation as control.

Further, history consistently shows that governments always chip away at freedoms through added control until a revolution or a foreign power takes over. The degree of tolerance for allowing each new level of control is directly proportional to how strongly one feels about freedom.

Since their invention, guns have been the last resort in maintaining or gaining freedom. That is why the Second Amendment came to be, not for hunting, sports or criminal activity.

I do not consider wanting to keep the personal protection of a gun paranoia but rather a lack of ignorance. I also have plenty of reasons to be distrustful of the current government as do most Americans, according to the polls.
