A man was shot in what apparently was a domestic fight at an apartment complex in an area of Tulsa that has become noted for violent crime.

The shooting occurred about 8:35 p.m. in an outdoor area at Prescott Woods, formerly known as Oxford Place Apartments, in the 1300 block of East 61st Street.

The man was shot in the torso and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, Sgt. Ryan Woods said. Information on his condition was not immediately available.

The call to police was reported as a domestic incident, and a woman was taken to the Tulsa Police Department’s Detective Division for questioning, he said.

The man and woman know each other, but Woods did not know their relationship or whether they live at the complex, he said.

Records show there have been 17 homicides in the area surrounding 61st Street and Peoria Avenue in the past two years. Eight of those killings have occurred at one apartment complex, the Fairmont Terrace.

About 80 residents and community leaders met Tuesday evening to form the 61st and Peoria Quality of Life Task Force, which will seek to reduce the area’s high crime rate by improving health, housing and social services there.
