James Robert (Jimmie) Meredith was born August 16, 1920 in Blythesville, Arkansas to Frederick and Doscia Arkland. He passed away peacefully on February 17, 2013 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning, February 23, 2013, at Brookside Baptist Church at 10:00. Jimmie was adopted at age two by Fred and Bertha Meredith after the death of his mother and twin sister, Louise. In 1932 the family moved to Tulsa where Jimmie spent the remainder of his life. After graduating from Tulsa Central High School in 1938, he joined the Oklahoma National Guard and served until January 1941. On February 1, 1941, he married the love of his life, Betty Jean Stoltz. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Jimmie and Betty purchased and operated his parents’ neighborhood grocery store until 1941, when he was employed by the United States Post Office. He attended the University of Tulsa and the University of Tulsa law school, passing the Oklahoma bar exam in 1950, and was a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association for over 60 years. At age 55, he retired from the First National Bank of Tulsa as Vice President and Senior Trust Officer, spending the remainder of his professional life in private practice. Jimmie spent many years researching his birth family history as well as his adopted family history. He and Betty drove many miles across many states to meet family and forge friendships with relatives. One of his life’s passions was to collect and compile the family’s stories to share with future generations. Preceded in death by his son, Joe, Jimmie is survived by his wife, Betty, sons, Jim and Ken, 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. We are forever thankful for the advice, grammar lessons, wonderful tales of a different era, and love we each received from him over the years. “Jimmie,” “Dad,” “Papaw” will be in our hearts forever and always. This obituary was published in the Tulsa World on 2/22/2013.
