Sooners trump Iowa 3-1

The No. 14-ranked University of Oklahoma baseball team triumphed 3-1 over Iowa in the first game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic on Friday in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Junior left-handed starting pitcher and preseason All-American Dillon Overton tossed eight shutout frames, fanning nine for the Sooners (7-0) to stymie the bats of Iowa (1-3). The reigning Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week struck out at least seven for the 12th time in his career and produced his second career start that yielded a shutout. He improved to 3-0 with an 0.56 ERA with 16 strikeouts and one walk.
Redshirt sophomore righty Robert Tasin worked the ninth and picked up the save, striking out one.
Senior infielder Jack Mayfield led the way at the plate with three hits while senior Max White drove in two runs. Junior infielder Matt Oberste, the reigning Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games dating back to the 2012 season.
OU takes on tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
ORU shut out by Louisiana Tech: Oral Roberts fell victim to Louisiana Tech's strong pitching in a 2-0 loss Friday night in Ruston, La.
Bulldog sophomore right-hander Phil Maton threw a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 batters.
Louisiana Tech improved to 2-3 as ORU fell to 1-4.
Right-hander Alex Gonzalez (0-2) allowed two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings pitched.
Shortstop Nate Goro led the Golden Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance as Oral Roberts tallied four hits in the loss.
Game two of the series is set for a 3 p.m. start Saturday.
