OKLAHOMA CITY - Last year, Perry saw its eight-year run as Class 3A state wrestling champions come to a halt at the hands Blackwell.
Friday, the Maroons took the first step toward regaining their winning ways advancing to Saturday's finals at State Fair Arena in the top spot by a 97-57 points margin over Locust Grove.
Berryhill will have two wrestlers going for state titles Saturday.
Junior Jonce Blaylock came into the meet with a 33-1 record and two state runner-up finishes. The 138-pounder will try for that elusive first title against Jay's Cole Wheeler. Blaylock recorded a first-period pin of Chandler's Blake Barrier in the semifinals.
Berryhill senior standout Davey Dolan is 110-0 over his past three years and will be looking for his fourth consecutive state title. The 145-pounder pinned Blackwell's Logan Simpson in the first period of their semifinal bout. Dolan will meet Perry's Colton Looper in the finals.
Perry came into the meet with 12 wrestlers qualified, but lost five opening-round matches. Perry won semifinal matches at 106, 120, 145, 152 and 160 pounds, but lost at 182 and 285 leaving them with only five for Saturday night's finals.
Still, the Maroons have a comfortable lead.
Locust Grove won at 113, 126 and 220 to edge into second, dropping Newkirk to third at 55.5 points. Newkirk also won in three weight classes (113, 120, and 170 pounds).
The top five are running a close race for the team title as Tonkawa is fourth at 45 while Berryhill and Plainview are tied for fifth at 42. Vian is sixth with 40.
