A “significant" winter storm will affect parts of the area Monday afternoon through early Tuesday, with 8 inches of snow or more possible in areas north and west of Tulsa, the National Weather Service said.
A blizzard warning was issued for Osage County through 6 a.m. Tuesday, along with more than 20 counties in western and northwestern Oklahoma.
Fourteen counties were under a winter storm warning for Monday into Tuesday morning.
A storm system will sweep across the area Monday afternoon, bringing chances for rain, which could change to snow by Monday evening in areas northwest of Interstate 44, forecasters said.
“Accumulating snow will be possible across northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas mainly Monday night into early Tuesday as colder air wraps into the area behind the exiting upper (storm) system,” forecasters said.
“Strong northwesterly winds developing Monday night will also result in areas of blowing snow and reduced visibilities … Up to 4 inches of snow appear likely in parts of northeast Oklahoma, with locally higher amounts possible, especially in Osage county.”
Pawnee, Washington and Nowata counties are under a winter storm warning from Monday night through Tuesday morning. Creek county is under a winter storm watch.
“There remains uncertainty concerning the track of the system and resultant snowfall, although it is likely that winter weather headlines will eventually be expanded farther east and south with later forecasts,” the weather service said.
Much of central parts of the state are under a winter storm warning through 6 a.m. Tuesday, with snow -- heavy at times -- expected Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning.
Blizzard warnings are in effect for the same time period for the western third of the state.
